Bargains, Barter, and Money ¬リニ

چکیده
We examine a search money model in which there is a symmetric coincidence of wants in all barter matches. However, when bargaining outcomes are asymmetric across matches, the barter economy is inefficient. Then a robust monetary equilibrium exists provided that money holders enjoy adequate bargaining terms. Fiat money may be welfare improving. In contrast to the literature, it is the asymmetry in bargains across matches rather than asymmetry in demands that generates these results. Money, barter, and costly information acquisition ¬リニ
Endogenous information structure is analyzed in a search model of production and exchange under qualitative uncertainty by allowing agents to invest in an inspection technology at a fixed cost where incurring a higher cost permits quality to be recognized with higher probability. In any equilibria where agents acquire information, some bad commodities are always produced. The information acquis...

Our findings suggest that Russian barter resulted partly fr...
متن کاملBarter Economies and Centralized Merchants
This essay analyzes the circumstances under which a barter system based on merchants and centralized markets dominates an unstructured primitive barter system. For that purpose, we set up a spatial general equilibrium model where exchange is costly. In an unstructured barter system, as population increases, the transaction costs may become cumbersome and the cost of trade expansion surpasses it...
متن کاملAsymmetry, imperfectly transferable utility, and the role of fiat money in improving terms of trade
We modify the Kiyotaki and Wright (1991, J. Economic Theory 53, 215 235; 1993, Amer. Econom. Rev. 83, 63-77) framework so that there is a universal double coincidence of wants in all barter matches. We also introduce divisible service sidepayments into the model and allow agents to bargain over bundles of goods, services and money in bilateral matches. In asymmetric matches, the agent that valu...
